When your message doesn’t match who you are now, everything feels off.
MAKE THE CONNECTION
Too many professionals are focused on content but have no idea who they’re actually talking to.
They post consistently. They follow the strategy. They stay visible. But behind the scenes?
They’re tired. They’re frustrated. And they’re quietly wondering why none of it seems to be working.
Believe it or not, for the first months of starting my business that was me. When I first launched Melanie Borden, LLC, I was trying to be everything to everyone. I had experience. I had ideas. I had strategy. But I didn’t have clarity. I hadn’t defined who I was speaking to. I didn’t understand what they were struggling with. And I had no real insight into where they spent their time or how they made decisions.
Once I got laser focused on who my audience was—what kept them up at night, where they consumed content, and how to speak to them—everything started to click.
People began to say:
“It feels like you were talking directly to me.”
And that’s when the traction really began.
Because when you stop trying to appeal to everyone, you finally become undeniable to the right people. So here is a few ideas to get you headed in the right direction:
1
Reconnect with what you’ve been downplaying. There’s a part of your story you’ve quietly buried because it doesn’t “fit” the version of success you’re chasing. But that part likely holds your greatest credibility.
Example: “I spent 10 years in corporate sales before launching my firm.” → That’s proof of resilience, leadership, and trust.
2
Translate your accomplishments into belief statements. Your wins aren’t just resume lines. They’re powerful trust signals—if you frame them right.
Example: “I scaled a team from 4 to 40.” → That means you’re a builder, a strategist, and someone who sees the big picture.
3
Get honest about what you’re done with. Clarity comes from subtraction, too. What no longer fits is just as revealing as what you want next.
Example: “I don’t want to manage teams anymore.” → That’s a cue to shift how you position yourself.
“The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t said.”
— Peter Drucker
