There’s a quiet narrative that runs in the minds of many founders and executives: “I need to wait.”
“I need to wait until the product launches.”
“I need to wait until I hire the right team.”
“I need to wait until I have more time.”
“I need to wait until the board weighs in.”
“I need to wait until it’s perfect.”
It sounds strategic. It sounds responsible. But most of the time, it’s not about readiness. It’s about approval.
Approval from the board.
Approval from your team.
Approval from the market.
Approval from the invisible audience in your head.
In Theatre of the Mind, I explore the internal narratives that quietly govern how leaders show up. One of the most powerful is this: “When everything is aligned, then I’ll show up.”
But that alignment rarely arrives. And waiting becomes a leadership pattern. Approval is not a strategy. And delay is often approval-seeking in disguise.
