BEHIND THE CURTAIN
There’s a moment in nearly every career where growth quietly outpaces visibility.
Your role expands. Your thinking sharpens. Your authority deepens.
But your public presence…your bio, your positioning, your story — stays stuck in a previous version of you. That’s when visibility starts to feel uncomfortable. Not because you don’t belong there but because you’re still performing an outdated role and it is time to change the scene. This is a pattern I noticed early in my client work and lived through myself.
It’s also what led me to formalize The Seven Ages of a Personal Brand, in my book, Theatre of the Mind, inspired by Shakespeare’s As You Like It and the line many of us know: “All the world’s a stage.”
Of course Shakespeare wasn’t talking about careers — he was talking about identity. About how we move through roles, evolve through seasons, and eventually outgrow the parts we once needed to play. Your brand evolves alongside your career — just often out of sync.
And that misalignment is where confidence starts to crack.
Below are three ways to realign what’s happening internally with how you show up publicly.
1
Audit the role you’re still performing publicly.
Look at your CV, LinkedIn profile, website, and how you introduce yourself. Ask yourself: Does this reflect who I am today? Most misalignment doesn’t come from a lack of skill but from outdated language, stories, and positioning that no longer fit.
2
Shift from proof to perspective.
Early career stages require evidence. Later stages require a point of view. If you’ve built results but still feel invisible, it’s often because you’re over-sharing execution and under-sharing how you think, decide, and lead.
3
Let go of the version that got you here.
This is the hardest part. Growth often means releasing an identity that once protected you. And accepting that some people will continue to see you as who you were — not who you are now. Leadership requires that release. When your internal evolution and external presence finally match, confidence replaces explanation. And the right people recognize you without needing convincing.
“Confidence doesn’t disappear when you evolve. It erodes when you keep performing a role you no longer recognize as yourself.”

ICYMI: I joined Tactical Harmony earlier this month with former NCIS Agent and client Rebecca Fitzsimmons. We talked about what happens when fear meets visibility—and how leaders can future-proof their careers by showing up with clarity and conviction. Click below to listen.
Ask Yourself This:
Is your business or career growing faster than the role you’re publicly performing? And what would change if you stopped performing — and started showing up as who you actually are now?
Until next time,
